Frac sand - 961 Words

Frac sand mining has become a booming business. Frac sand is also known as silica sand has many uses and has recently had a major spike in demand. The silica sand industry recent increase from demand has come from the new oil/natural gas extraction process hydraulic fracturing commonly known as â€Å"fracking†. This new demand for more silica sand, and more silica sand mines has many benefits economically but is also facing strong resistance. As the more and more mines continue to develop among our region in the Midwest more questions are being asked. Silica sand is made up of very pure quartz. Silica sand can be found in granite, gneiss, and sandstone. The grains of silica sand can range in sizes from 2.38 millimeters to 105 microns. The†¦show more content†¦(Dolley, 2011) According to Wisconsin’s center for investigative journalism, there are currently 131 mining sites that have been permitted or proposed in Wisconsin. All of this mining has caused some co ncern from many people in the area. Concerns about health risks, traffic, and property value are at the top of the list. With 65% of the sand being transported to its destination by truck, there is much concern of the noise from the trucks near homes and businesses, as well as the impact that all of the traffic could have on the roads. (Dolley, 2011) Silica sand mining has its ups and its downs, but one that looks to be clear is that this booming business is not going anywhere any time soon. With a nation that would like to become energy independent frac sand may be the key to open that door. The industry may have some people concerned about what some of the effects of all this frac sand mining may be, but as long as the demand continues to rise there will still be frac sand mining. What Is the Densest Element on the Periodic Table

Have you ever wondered which element has the highest density or mass per unit volume? While osmium is generally cited as the element with the highest density, the answer isnt always true. Heres an explanation of density and how the value is determined. Density is mass per unit volume. It can be measured experimentally or predicted based on properties of matter and how it behaves under certain conditions. As it turns out, either of two elements can be considered the element with the highest density: osmium or iridium.  Both osmium and iridium are very dense metals, each weighing approximately twice as much as lead. At room temperature and pressure, the calculated density of osmium is 22.61 g/cm3  and the calculated density of iridium is 22.65 g/cm3. However, the experimentally measured value (using x-ray crystallography) for osmium is 22.59 g/cm3, while that of iridium is only 22.56 g/cm3. Normally, osmium is the densest element. However, the density of the element depends on many factors. These include the allotrope (form) of the element, the pressure, and the temperature, so there isnt a single value for density. For example, hydrogen gas on earth has a very low density, yet that same element in the Sun has a density surpassing that of either osmium or iridium on Earth. If both osmium and iridium density are measured under ordinary conditions, osmium takes the prize. Yet, slightly different conditions could cause iridium to come out ahead. At room temperature and a pressure above 2.98 GPa, iridium is denser than osmium, with a density of 22.75 grams per cubic centimeter. Why Osmium Is Densest When Heavier Elements Exist Assuming osmium has the highest density, you might be wondering why elements with a higher atomic number arent denser. After all, each atom weighs more. But, density is mass per unit volume. Osmium (and iridium) have a very small atomic radius, so the mass is packed into a small volume. The reason this happens is  the f electron orbitals are contracted at the n5 and n6 orbitals because the electrons in them arent well-shielded from the attractive force of the positive-charged nucleus. Also, the high atomic number of osmium brings relativistic effects into play. The electrons orbit the atomic nucleus so fast their apparent mass increases and the s orbital radius decreases. Confused? In a nutshell, osmium and iridium are denser than lead and other elements with higher atomic numbers because these metals combine a large atomic number with a small atomic radius. Other Materials With High-Density Values Basalt is the type of rock with the highest density. With an average value around 3 grams per cubic centimeter, its not even close to that of the metals, but its still heavy. Depending on its composition, diorite might also be considered a contender. The densest liquid on Earth is the liquid element mercury, which has a density of 13.5 grams per cubic centimeter.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is an historical fiction novel, written by Khaled Hosseini, set in Afghanistan during the late 1960’s to early 2000’s. It follows the life of Mariam, a ‘harami’ child, who experiences the twisted reality of polygamy first hand. Hosseini explores thought provoking ideas in a society where gender inequality and poorly valued education is the normality. Hosseini’s main purpose is to show the importance of differing perspectives, as well as how to discern between the right and wrong ones. A key theme that almost instantly emerged from the text as I began to read was gender equality – or the lack thereof. I am passionate about equality between the genders and the further I read the more unequal the characters were†¦show more content†¦The Women’s March was a worldwide protest aimed to advocate not only women’s rights, but all human rights, health care and other topical issues. I personally believe that this protest was one of the most empowering of all time, showcasing the incredible power found in a united front of people. Not only independent, strong female ‘feminists’, but also men who believe equal opportunities are deserved by all. As Emma Watson, famous actress and feminism advocate, once said, â€Å"It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals†. This quote from such an inspiring woman came to the surface as I read this book, because it holds such truth applicable to A Tho usand Splendid Suns. It successfully reinforces this novel’s main theme of gender inequality. An interesting idea that A Thousand Splendid Suns addressed was the importance of education. Khaled Hosseini seemed to be suggesting that in Mariam’s world there is no use in a girl getting an education. We see this in the text when Mariam expresses her interest to Nana about going to school. Nana says, â€Å"You’ll learn nothing of value in those schools. There is only one, only one skill a woman like you and me needs in life. And it’s this: Endure†. This shows us how education is valued in another culture, in this case, in Afghanistan. The previously mentioned expenditures prior to the Cope Station project–the investment on SCR equipment and on the emission and pollution control equipment—are considered sunk costs. Whether SCEG would push through with the Cope project or not, the costs of these equipments have already been incurred. Hence, they are irrelevant to the project. SCEG reported in its statement of projected expenditure that the budget for the Cope Station project was $ 26 million (â€Å"SCANA Corp. 2007-2009 Projection Expenditure,† 2007). Since the investment would cost $ 69 million, it would result in a budget deficit of $ 43 million. This implies that the company had to make budget adjustments in order to fund the said project. When the project is complete, it would surely result in â€Å"clean, safe, and reliable power source for [the] citizens and industries† (Zaleski, 2007). Although it would not bring the company explicit financial benefits, by making the plant environment-friendly, the project can further contribute to the healthy relationship of SCEG with its neighboring communities. Media vs. Parenting Essay The Impact On a Childs Behavior Media vs. Parenting Essay What impact does sex, violence, drugs, etc. in the media have on children? What can we do about it? How do we balance the tension between freedom of expression and the need to protect children? When you talk about the media and whether or not it is harmful on children, you must examine the whole industry and all aspects of its effects on children. It is that the media as a whole is not as harmful to children as some intense other can, but over exposure to certain aspects of certain types of media can be harmful. To say that all media can be harmful to children is a fallacy that must be avoided when examining this topic. Most people when analyzing this issue tend to focus on drugs, sex, and violence in terms of the television media. Although those are some of the main topics throughout the history of this topic, there are more important issues then just that as said. This is an argument that should indefinitely point out the major impacts on young children. However this will be examining this topic in a much broader sense that will encompass the media as an entity and not focus only on the negative aspects but also the positive aspects of the media to show that the media is not in all ways bad for children. Media affecting children is increasingly rising, and is becoming a big factor among childrens behaviors, but other factors such as parenting will also participate to whether media is harmful to children. During the formation of our Constitution, our forefathers had enough foresight to know that one of the most sacred freedoms that a society can have is freedom of the press. They, however, could not envision how many different forms of the press there would be in the years after the Constitution was written. During our nations formative years, the term press was primarily restricted to media in terms of newspapers and books. Over the years with different courts, congresses, and presidents, we have seen an expansion of the term press. This has been made even more so with advancing technology and the global expansion of the media. Therefore when we examine the media we must take a contemporary approach to this issue rather than looking at the issue based on the past. The media has long been an easy target for the ills of society. If we go back to the times of the beginnings of World War II we can see how many at the time were turning a negative glance towards the media. William Randolph Hearst was widely criticized by his contemporary for focusing on media stories that related to crime and pseudo science. Those who disliked Hearst or competed against him called his brand of media yellow press. However is can we accuse a person of imposing bad media onto society, just because we do not believe in what they wish to talk about? The second amendment assures us that we have the right to voice our opinions, therefore by holding his ground I believe Mr. Hearst was not doing harm to society but just doing what he thought he was entitled to do. I will further discuss other prominent individuals in the media and how they have been perceived. In a matter of seconds, 80% children can impersonate an action hero in a video action game, A TV show, Reality shows or even a movie/TV character. We see a lot of media as happy, energetic, and exciting. We rarely see the media as depressed, boring, and unattractive. Sadly, as much as happy, exciting, and energetic sounds so great, a great number of that happy media is related to sex, violence, drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Children rely on the television, games, magazines, and the internet to occupy their time.
